Sir Roger Norrington leads BSO in Beethoven’s Ninth at Tanglewood

Sir Roger Norrington leads BSO in Beethoven’s Ninth at Tanglewood

August 25, 2002 performance, reviewed by Dave Conlin Read

Under the exuberant direction of Sir Roger Norrington, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Tanglewood Festival Chorus, and a quartet of vocal soloists closed the orchestra’s 2002 Tanglewood season with a truly joyful performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Opus 125.

This most familiar composition, so often used to commemorate solemn occasions around the world, today was given a mirthful reading appropriate to the true nature of the event – the culminating high point of an annual festival. It has been the Tanglewood finale each August since 1997, but made amazingly new by Norrington, including a re-ordering of the orchestra’s seating arrangement.

The setting outside was as splendid and brilliant as the sound coming from inside the Koussevitsky Shed, the opening of which in 1938 was memorialized with this same symphony. Over the bluegreen hills surrounding the Tanglewood campus, cumulous clouds slowly drifted along, moved by a generous breeze that was a boon to frisbee flingers but a bother to paper plate picnickers among the nearly 13,000 attendees.

Adding to the enjoyment of the performance was the fact that Norrington’s rendition clocked a mere 66 minutes, including an extra minute or two between the first and second movements to allow for the seating of scores of tardy people, way less than the usual 74 minutes, a standard that was used to set the maximum capacity of the compact disc when it was introduced twenty years ago.
(Phillips and Sony each name Beethoven’s Ninth as the ideal)

During that betwen-movements interval, the conductor gave an early indication that he had a special treat in store for us, when turning to face the audience, he leaned playfully for a moment against the podium with an expression of mock exasperation, looking more like a patient parent than an interrupted artist. There were more glances into the audience during the performance, even while his baton waved at the orchestra, and then a big wink just before a loud honking of the contrabassoon. A moment later, bass baritone Nathan Berg intoned Beethoven’s introduction to Schiller’s ode:

O friends, not these tones;
Rather, let us tune our voices
In more pleasant and more joyful song.

What followed was 17 minutes of the most exhilirating and powerful melding of voice and orchestra imaginable. Each of the soloist sang beautifully, (Christine Brewer, Jill Grove, Stanfod Olson, and Berg), but the most beautiful sound was that made by the 120 voices of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus.

Beethoven’s Ninth is a great sonic gift, bequeathed to mankind by a deaf man, the creation of which represents his refusal to yield to gloom. Instead of despairing, he returned to a passion from his youth, Schiller’s ecstatic folk song, and in defiance of the conventions of his art, made this new thing, a symphony wherein the voice is the crucial instrument, extolling sentiments that translate well to all people of good will. Hearty thanks to Maestro Norrington and all the musicians under his direction today, and all the others throughout the memorable Tanglewood 2002 season.

Clark Art schedules El Anatsui sculpture exhibition

An exhibition of sculpture by El Anatsui is scheduled for June 12 through October 16, 2011 at the Stone Hill Center of the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown. It will run concurrent with Pissarro’s People in the Clark’s main building, expected to be one of top attractions in the Berkshires this year. Also on display will be an exhibition of contemporary photograhs by Candida Höfer and Thomas Struth.

El Anatsui will present three of the artist’s compelling sculptures within the two galleries of Stone Hill Center. Hand wrought of found aluminum wrappers from liquor bottles, Anatsui’s sculptures arduously marry textile design and patterning from Nigeria and Ghana with modernist grid-based abstraction. The opulent beauty of these works provides a fascinating counterpoint to the questions they raise about waste, consumerism, and the legacy of colonialism.

Two of the works that will be installed at the Clark, Intermittent Signals (2009), a dramatic piece measuring 11 x 35 feet and Strips of Earth’s Skin (2008), measuring 10 x 22 feet, are on loan from the Broad Art Foundation, Santa Monica, California. The third work, Delta (2010), a new work measuring 11 x 11 feet, will make its museum debut at the Clark and is on loan from a private collection.

Although they had been widely exhibited for more than 30 years, El Anatsui’s works came to the attention of global audiences with their inclusion in Africa Remix, a landmark exhibition presented internationally from 2004 to 2007. Born in Ghana and living in Nigeria, his participation in major exhibitions such as the 2007 Venice Biennale and Who Knows Tomorrow at Berlin’s Nationalgalerie in 2010 established Anatsui as one of the most significant artistic innovators of our time. Until June 26, Anatsui’s work can also be seen at the Davis Museum at Wellesley College in an exhibition that will later travel to the Museum for African Art in New York as part of a major national tour.

The works will be shown in the Tadao Ando-designed Stone Hill Center in two intimate, naturally lit galleries offering landscape views.
A publication will be produced in conjunction with the installation, which will include an essay by Alisa LaGamma, Curator in the Department of the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and an interview with El Anatsui conducted by former Clark fellow Chika Okeke-Agulu, Assistant Professor in the Art and Archaeology Department at Princeton University. David Breslin is guest curator of the installation.

The Clark also is pleased to offer a range of special programming to complement the work of El Anatsui. On July 24 renowned curator and filmmaker Susan Vogel will screen her documentary entitled Fold Crumple Crush: The Art of El Anatsui and deliver a talk about the making of the film, which follows the artist for three years and gives an insider’s view of the artist’s practice and techniques. Additionally, a Ghanaian storyteller will present weekly tales on the picaresque balcony of Stone Hill Center. See also: cultural events in the Berkshires during June 2011.

Window Washer, poem by Christopher Todd Matthews

Window Washer

One hand slops suds on, one
hustles them down like a blind.
Brusque noon glare, filtered thus,
loosens and glows. For five or
six minutes he owns the place,
dismal coffee bar, and us, its
huddled underemployed. A blade,
black line against the topmost glass,

begins, slices off the outer lather,
flings it away, works inward,
corrals the frothy middle, and carves,
with quick cuts, the stuff down,
not looking for anything, beneath
or inside. Homes to the last,
cleans its edges, grooms it for
the end, then shaves it off

and flings it away. Which is
splendid, and merciless. And all
in the wrist. Then, he looks at us.
We makers of filth, we splashers
and spitters. We sitters and watchers.
Who like to see him work.
Who love it when he leaves
and gives it back: our grim hideout,
half spoiled by clarity.

American Life in Poetry: Column 318. BY TED KOOSER, U.S. POET LAUREATE, 2004-2006

I love poems that take pains to observe people at their tasks, and here’s a fine one by Christopher Todd Matthews, who lives in Virginia.
