Jacob’s Pillow schedules LGBT weekend

Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival schedules its second annual Weekend OUT for August 5, 6, 7, 2011, featuring free events, performances, and tours, the opportunity for LGBT families, individuals, and couples to take advantage of all Jacob’s Pillow has to offer while meeting and mingling with old and new friends. Scheduled weekend events include the photography exhibit Annie Leibovitz:DANCE which honors the 30th anniversary of Mark Morris Dance Group; a free performance by the Jazz/Musical Theatre Dance students of The School at Jacob’s Pillow; a free film on the glamorous Paris Opera Ballet star Claude Bessy, and more. “Weekend OUT” will also feature a special behind-the-scenes historic tour of Jacob’s Pillow on Sunday, August 7 at noon, guided by Jacob’s Pillow Director of Preservation, Norton Owen, and focusing on iconic Pillow-founder Ted Shawn, his company of Men Dancers, and his mission to represent strength and masculinity in dance.

Performance highlights include the U.S. debut of 3e Étage: Soloists and Dancers of the Paris Opera Ballet, who showcase their versatility in varied program of witty contemporary ballet works, and the much-talked-about choreographer Jonah Bokaer, in multimedia dances that merge the visual arts and movement.

The 2005 Tanglewood on Parade may be remebered as the Five Conductors show for the parade of maestros to the podium in the Serge Kousevitsky Music Shed during the gala concert that culminated the all-day musical celebration for the benefit of the Tanglewood Music Center, now 65 years old. By nightfall, an audience of 12,345 had massed at the Shed after an afternoon of recitals, concerts, and demonstrations throughout the campus by students of the Boston University Tanglewood Institute and Fellows of the Tanglewood Music Center.

First to the podium was Music Director James Levine to lead the B.S.O. in Berlioz’ Roman Carnival Overture. Wearing a tuxedo on a very hot day, the ruddy-faced maestro wrung a rousing performance from his casually clad players. So swept up was he in the final measure that it looked like he was twirling a lariat, about to rope a brace of basses. Smart programming that, forcing the audiences attention back to the delights of music and away from the joy of the fancy picnic.

Up next was Boston Pops principal guest conductor Bruce Hangen to lead the Pops in the Symphonic Dances from T.M.C. alumnus Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story. This was a bravura performance that showcased both the brilliance of the orchestra and the genius of the composer. There were moments when you could’ve mistook Hangen and the Pops for Benny Goodman and his Big Band, so swell did they swing!

Then Pops conductor emeritus John Williams took over, and delighted the audience that had so warmly welcomed him by conducting the Pops in two passages from his own Star Wars score. Maestro Levine came back onstage after intermission, straddling a chair backwards like a kibitzer at a card table, to invoke the spirit of Serge Koussevitsky, express his feelings about being at Tangelwood, and to introduce his predecessor, “colleague and friend” Seiji Ozawa.

The beaming Ozawa sprinted to center stage, hugged Levine, glanced at the adoring audience, clasped hands with four or five T.M.C. players and got right to work leading the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra in a thrilling performance of Beethoven’s Leonore Overture No. 3.

They simply blew the roof off the joint, these young musicians who didn’t know each other until last month and who weren’t even born until Seiji Ozawa was into the second decade of his Tanglewood tenure. The nimble Ozawa, whose contract with the Vienna State Opera was recently extended through the 2009-10 season, was lithe as ever on the podium – a whole body conducting manner that’s both commanding and eloquent.

Frequent Tanglewood guest conductor Hans Graf was the right choice to lead the combined orchestras in the grand finale, Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. Wearing a white tunic and projecting a stately demeanor, he conducted a fine aural war, satisfying our appetites for the lush and romantic as well as the savage and martial.

(There were 4 conductors on the Tanglewood on Parade program in 2001, Seiji Ozawa’s last as B.S.O. Music Director, including Andre Previn. A new composition by Chris Brubeck was given its Tanglewood debut, and Ozawa was given an authentic Civil War cannon.)

The annual Labor Day Tanglewood Jazz Festival is the most noteworthy event on the Berkshires performing arts schedule, which also inludes plays at Barrington Stage, Shakespeare & Co., Berkshire Theatre Festival and the Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield. September marks the transition to the always fabulous Berkshires Fall Foliage season, celebrated in Lenox and Lee with the Lenox Apple Squeeze and Lee Founders’ Weekend, and also is time for the number one athletic event in Berkshire county, the Josh Billings RunAground.

    Berkshires 4Theatre Passport Program

    The Berkshires 4Theatre Passport Program offers single ticket buyers who attend three main stage shows at Barrington Stage Company, Berkshire Theatre Festival, Shakespeare & Company, or Williamstown Theatre Festival a free ticket to attend a 4th main stage show at any of the four theatres. Local residents and visitors to the Berkshires will learn about the program through the local distribution of bright orange printed passports. Passports will be seen at all key social spots and tourist centers where they may be picked up and then stamped at box offices.

    Barrington Stage Company

    In 2004, BSC developed, workshopped and premiered William Finn and Rachel Sheinkin’s musical The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee which took Broadway by storm in 2005, capturing two Tony Awards (for Best Book and Best Featured Actor), Three Drama Desk Awards and numerous other awards. In 2009, Mark St. Germain’s Freud’s Last Session was a tremendous success with both critics and audiences, becoming the longest running play in BSC’s history. Now playing at the Marjorie S. Deane Little Theater, the production is the longest running play of the current Off-Broadway season. In 2007 Barrington Stage Company’s Playwright Mentoring Project for at-risk youth received the national Coming Up Taller Award from the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities, the nation’s highest honor for after school programs. 2011 Barrington Stage Company schedule.

    Williamstown Theatre Festival

    For 57 years, the Williamstown Theatre Festival has been a leader in the American theatre, providing a vibrant artistic home for the nation’s top established and emerging theatre artists. In 2002, the Festival was honored with the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre in recognition of a “continuous level of artistic achievement contributing to the growth of theatre nationally.” Earlier this year, WTF was honored with the Commonwealth Award for Achievement, becoming the first theatre company to receive this recognition.
