Berkshires jazz concerts April 2014

BerkshiresJazz presents concerts in Gt. Barrington, Pittsfield, and Lee, MA during April to celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month. Pianist Armen Donelian introduces his new double CD with a performance at Castle Street Café in Great Barrington on Sunday, Apr. 27.

On Saturday, April 12 at 1PM, there will be a double header matinee at the First Congregational Church on Park Square in Lee, with Nico Wohl and Friends, featuring the 13-year-old guitarist who has been wowing audiences all over the Berkshires, followed by the Williams College Jazz Quintet, featuring alto saxophonist Kris Allen. The Berkshire Music School Jazz Ensemble under the direction of bassist Andy Wrba will perform at Mission Bar y Tapas on North Street in Pittsfield on Monday, Apr. 14. The ensemble’s 6pm performance (free admission, first come first seated) will precede Wrba’s regular Jazz at Mission set.

Boston Symphony announces 2014-15 season

The Boston Symphony Orchestra will present a live stream of the announcement of the 2014-15 season, marking Maestro Andris Nelsons first full season as Music Director of the BSO. He was was appointed the 15th music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra on May 16, 2013, succeeding James Levine, who was music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 2004 to 2011. Nelsons is the youngest music director to lead the Boston Symphony Orchestra in over 100 years; he is also the first Latvian-born conductor to take on the post. The Boston Symphony Orchestra announces their 2014-15 season Wednesday, March 5, at 2:30 p.m. at Symphony Hall in Boston. This is of interest to Tanglewood patrons and others because it marks the first season with Andris Nelsons as the orchestra’s new music director. Maestro Nelsons makes his first Tanglewood appearance on July 11 on a program with German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter. Read more: 2014 Tanglewood schedule.

BSC presents staged reading at MCLA

Barrington Stage Company presents a staged reading a staged reading of Dance Lessons, the new romantic comedy by Mark St. Germain, 7pm on March 8, 2014, at Church Street Center on the campus of Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) in North Adams, MA. It will be followed by a Q & A session and reception. Dance Lessons will be premiered on the BSC’s Mainstage this August. Barrington Stage Company’s 2014 schedule.

Berkshire Museum renovations

Construction will be underway at the Berkshhire Museum through May 2014during renovations, some galleries may be temporarily closed and access to the second floor will be limited to stairs. More related: Map showing museums and historic sites in the Berkshires.

Berkshire Music School present Carnival of the Animals at the Berkshire Museum

The Berkshire Music School will present Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saëns in concert at the Berkshire Museum on Monday, February 17, and Thursday, February 20, at 1 p.m. Berkshire Music School students and faculty members will perform Saint-Saëns’ popular tribute to the world of animals, a whimsical and humorous musical suite of fourteen movements that is sure to delight the whole family. After the 30-minute performance, audience members can use their programs as a guide, exploring the Museum to find examples of all the animals portrayed in the music.

Barrington, MACowboy Junkies, the Canadian alternative country/blues/folk rock band, have a concert scheduled for 8 mp on Saturday March 8, 2014 at the beautifully restored Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center in Great Barrington, MA. For more than 20 years, the Cowboy Junkies have remained true to their unique artistic vision and to the introspective, quiet intensity that is their musical signature, creating a critically acclaimed body of original work that has endeared them to an audience unwavering in its loyalty.They have released 16 studio albums, several live albums, and a number of singles and built up a dedicated following in the alternative rock community. Since the release of The Trinity Session (1987), the Cowboy Junkies have been popular and busy beyond the usual boundaries of rock stars and their music has been featured in dozens of television programs and feature films. Their The Nomad Series, made up of four albums, Renmin Park, Demons, Sing in My Meadow, The Wilderness was released over an 18-month period. The latest, The Wilderness, was released in February of 2012 and demonstrates that the Cowboy Junkies are still into that hypnotic melodious brooding thing.

Tickets are $30 to $50. The Mahaiwe is located at 14 Castle Street in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Box office hours are Wednesday through Saturday from noon to 6:00pm and three hours before show times.

About the Mahaiwe

Located in downtown Great Barrington, Massachusetts, the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center is the year-round presenter of world-class music, dance, theater, classic films, “Live in HD” broadcasts, and arts education programs for the southern Berkshires and neighboring regions.
