Michael Feinstein Holiday Show at the Mahaiwe Nov. 26, 2010

On the schedule of things to do in the Berkshires during the 2010 holiday season is the Michael Feinstein Holiday Show, with Feinstein, dubbed “The Ambassador of the Great American Songbook,” in performance at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center, Gt. Barrington, on Nov. 26, 2010 at 8 PM.

Michael Feinstein is nationally recognized for his commitment to celebrating America’s popular song and preserving its legacy for the next generation. Feinstein’s love of song can be heard in The Sinatra Project, his 2009 Concord Records CD celebrating the music of “Ol’ Blue Eyes,” and in the PBS series Michael Feinstein’s American Songbook. Tickets are $52 to $82, with a special $102 ticket that includes both the concert and a private reception with the artist.

2018 Tanglewood schedule

The 2018 Tanglewood schedulefeatures a season-long celebration of the centennial of Leonard’s Bernstein’s birth, culminating in the Aug. 25 Bernstein Centennial Celebration hosted by Audra McDonald, with Maestro Andris Nelsons, four guest conductors and soloists Yo-Yo Ma, Midori, and others.

Berkshires skiing areas map

Skiing is a favorite activity in the Berkshires and has been an important component of the local tourism industry for as long as Tanglewood has. In 1935, the first of the famous “ski trains” left Grand Central Station in New York bound for Bousquet’s in Pittsfield, MA, where the rope tow was perfected and night skiing was introduced. Before being discontinued in 1942, the ski trains to the Berkshires became very popular, delivering 4,000 skiers a day, and establishing Berkshire county as a skiing destination, with several ski areas and year-round resorts offering a variety of activities besides downhill skiing.

Norman Rockwell Museum schedules Jerry Pinkney exhibition

Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Mass. schedules the exhibition Witness: The Art of Jerry Pinkney, to run from November 13, 2010 through May 30, 2011. Mr. Pinkney, winner of the 2010 Caldecott Medal, will attend the opening reception on Nov. 13, 2010 from 6 – 8PM.

The exhibition features work from Pinkney’s fifty year career, including illustrations for these books: The Lion and The Mouse, The Old African, John Henry, Black Cowboys/Wild Horses, Uncle Remus: The Complete Tales, The Sweethearts of Rhythm, and The Little Match Girl. On display also will be work commissioned for these projects: African Burial Ground Interpretive Center, New York City; National Parks Service Carver National Monument, Missouri; and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, Cincinnati.

Norman Rockwell Museum

The Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Mass., a popular cultural venue in the Berkshires, houses 574 of Norman Rockwell’s paintings and drawings. Rockwell (1894- 1978), who lived in Stockbridge for the last 25 years of his life, helped establish the museum, which occupies 36-acre site overlooking the Housatonic River, with a main gallery building designed by Robert Stern and including Rockwell’s studio.

In addition to permanent displays of Rockwell’s work, the museum schedules traveling exhibitions and special educational, curatorial, and entertainment programs with an emphasis on illustration and story telling. Over the years, the schedule at the Norman Rockwell Museum has included exhibitions featuring the art of the New Yorker, Frederic Remington, James Gurney, National Geographic Society illustrators, and Stan and Jan Berenstain.
