{"id":67,"date":"2025-09-26T08:43:48","date_gmt":"2025-09-26T13:43:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idealpoetry.com\/?p=67"},"modified":"2025-10-03T12:42:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-03T16:42:12","slug":"uriel-by-ralph-waldo-emerson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/idealpoetry.com\/rwc\/uriel-by-ralph-waldo-emerson\/","title":{"rendered":"Uriel, by Ralph Waldo Emerson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harold_Bloom\" target=\"_blank\">Harold Bloom<\/a> (1930-2019), Robert Frost deemed <a href=\"https:\/\/emersoncentral.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ralph Waldo Emerson&#8217;s<\/a> poem <em>Uriel<\/em> to be &#8220;the best Western poem yet.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"model-title\">Uriel<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"model\">IT fell in the ancient periods<br \/>\n  Which the brooding soul surveys,<br \/>\nOr ever the wild Time coin&#8217;d itself<br \/>\n  Into calendar months and days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"model\">This was the lapse of Uriel,<br \/>\nWhich in Paradise befell.<br \/>\nOnce, among the Pleiads walking,<br \/>\nSayd overheard the young gods talking;<br \/>\nAnd the treason, too long pent,<br \/>\nTo his ears was evident.<br \/>\nThe young deities discuss&#8217;d<br \/>\nLaws of form, and metre just,<br \/>\nOrb, quintessence, and sunbeams,<br \/>\nWhat subsisteth, and what seems.<br \/>\nOne, with low tones that decide,<br \/>\nAnd doubt and reverend use defied,<br \/>\nWith a look that solved the sphere,<br \/>\nAnd stirr&#8217;d the devils everywhere,<br \/>\nGave his sentiment divine<br \/>\nAgainst the being of a line.<br \/>\n&#8216;Line in nature is not found;<br \/>\nUnit and universe are round;<br \/>\nIn vain produced, all rays return;<br \/>\nEvil will bless, and ice will burn.&#8217;<br \/>\nAs Uriel spoke with piercing eye,<br \/>\nA shudder ran around the sky;<br \/>\nThe stern old war-gods shook their heads;<br \/>\nThe seraphs frown&#8217;d from myrtle-beds;<br \/>\nSeem&#8217;d to the holy festival<br \/>\nThe rash word boded ill to all;<br \/>\nThe balance-beam of Fate was bent;<br \/>\nThe bounds of good and ill were rent;<br \/>\nStrong Hades could not keep his own,<br \/>\nBut all slid to confusion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"model\">A sad self-knowledge withering fell<br \/>\nOn the beauty of Uriel;<br \/>\nIn heaven once eminent, the god<br \/>\nWithdrew that hour into his cloud;<br \/>\nWhether doom&#8217;d to long gyration<br \/>\nIn the sea of generation,<br \/>\nOr by knowledge grown too bright<br \/>\nTo hit the nerve of feebler sight.<br \/>\nStraightway a forgetting wind<br \/>\nStole over the celestial kind,<br \/>\nAnd their lips the secret kept,<br \/>\nIf in ashes the fire-seed slept.<br \/>\nBut, now and then, truth-speaking things<br \/>\nShamed the angels&#8217; veiling wings;<br \/>\nAnd, shrilling from the solar course,<br \/>\nOr from fruit of chemic force,<br \/>\nProcession of a soul in matter,<br \/>\nOr the speeding change of water,<br \/>\nOr out of the good of evil born,<br \/>\nCame Uriel&#8217;s voice of cherub scorn,<br \/>\nAnd a blush tinged the upper sky,<br \/>\nAnd the gods shook, they knew not why.<\/p>\n<p class=\"model\">Ralph Waldo Emerson<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to Harold Bloom (1930-2019), Robert Frost deemed Ralph Waldo Emerson&#8217;s poem Uriel to be &#8220;the best Western poem yet.&#8221; Uriel IT fell in the ancient periods Which the brooding soul surveys, Or ever the wild Time coin&#8217;d itself Into calendar months and days.
