Here\u2019s a poem by <strong>Edward Hirsch<\/strong>, who lives in New York, that offers our younger readers a look at what&#8217;s to come. <strong>Ted Kooser, U.S. Poet Laureate<\/strong>, 2004-06.<\/p>\n<h3>Early Sunday Morning<\/h3>\n<p>       <strong>by Edward Hirsch<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I used to mock my father and his chums<br \/>\nfor getting up early on Sunday morning<br \/>\nand drinking coffee at a local spot<br \/>\nbut now I\u2019m one of those chumps.<\/p>\n<p>No one cares about my old humiliations<br \/>\nbut they go on dragging through my sleep<br \/>\nlike a string of empty tin cans rattling<br \/>\nbehind an abandoned car.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s like this: just when you think<br \/>\nyou have forgotten that red-haired girl<br \/>\nwho left you stranded in a parking lot<br \/>\nforty years ago, you wake up<\/p>\n<p>early enough to see her disappearing<br \/>\naround the corner of your dream<br \/>\non someone else\u2019s motorcycle<br \/>\nroaring onto the highway at sunrise.<\/p>\n<p>And so now I\u2019m sitting in a dimly lit<br \/>\ncaf\u00e9 full of early morning risers<br \/>\nwhere the windows are covered with soot<br \/>\nand the coffee is warm and bitter.<\/p>\n<p>American Life in Poetry is made possible by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/\">The Poetry Foundation<\/a>, publisher of <strong>Poetry magazine<\/strong>.
