{"id":39,"date":"2025-09-25T16:21:02","date_gmt":"2025-09-25T21:21:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idealpoetry.com\/?p=39"},"modified":"2025-10-03T12:44:25","modified_gmt":"2025-10-03T16:44:25","slug":"the-pasture-by-robert-frost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/idealpoetry.com\/rwc\/the-pasture-by-robert-frost\/","title":{"rendered":"The Pasture, by Robert Frost"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To begin this collection of Ideal Poems, here is one by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poets\/robert-frost\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Frost<\/a> (1874-1963). <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louise_Bogan\" target=\"_blank\">Louise Bogan<\/a><\/strong> (1897-1970), who reviewed poetry for the <strong>New Yorker<\/strong> for forty years, wrote this: <em>The Pasture,<\/em> \u201c\u2026 is a love song, among other things \u2013 surely one of the loveliest in the language.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"model-title\">The Pasture<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"model\">I\u2019m going out to clean the pasture spring;<br \/>\nI\u2019ll only stop to rake the leaves away<br \/>\n(And wait to watch the water clear, I may):<br \/>\nI sha\u2019n\u2019t be gone long.\u2014You come too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"model\">I\u2019m going out to fetch the little calf<br \/>\nThat\u2019s standing by the mother. It\u2019s so young,<br \/>\nIt totters when she licks it with her tongue.<br \/>\nI sha\u2019n\u2019t be gone long.\u2014You come too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"model\">Robert Frost<\/p>\n<p>The ideal aspect of this is the blunt invitation to the reader to accompany the poet. This is a rare case where a poem that opens with &#8220;I&#8221; fairly embraces the reader.
