His first program, August 14, initiates a weekend highlighted by three great Romantic piano concertos, as he conducts <strong>Rachmaninoff\u2019s<\/strong> tempestuous <em>Piano Concerto No. <\/em>3, performed by <strong>Yefim Bronfman<\/strong>, on a program with <em>Shostakovich\u2019s Symphony No. 5<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p>Tilson Thomas&#8217; second program is a project especially dear to his heart. <em>The Thomashefskys: Music and Memories of a Life in the Yiddish Theatre<\/em> is a musical homage to his grandparents, who were leading performers in Yiddish theater in the \u201920s and \u201930s (Aug. 19 and 20). This lively <strong>Ozawa Hall<\/strong> program is scripted and narrated by Tilson Thomas, who also plays piano and conducts. It features the original performers who helped with the show\u2019s creation in 2005: <strong>Judy Blazer, Neal Benari, Ronit Widmann-Levy, and Eugene Brancoveanu<\/strong>, all making their Tanglewood debuts. Pat Birch directs.<\/p>\n<p>Frequent Tanglewood guest <strong>Andre Previn<\/strong> returns August 15 to collaborate with one of his favorite soloists, pianist <strong>Jean-Yves Thibaudet<\/strong>, in <strong>Liszt\u2019s<\/strong> poetic <em>Piano Concerto No. 2<\/em>, on a program with <strong>Beethoven\u2019s<\/strong> <em>Symphony No. 4<\/em> and <strong>Ravel\u2019s<\/strong> <em>La Valse<\/em>. Previn goes back to his early jazz piano roots with a special evening of standards in Ozawa Hall on August 16 in a concert with longtime collaborator bassist <strong>David Finck<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kurt Masur<\/strong> takes the podium Sunday afternoon August 16 to lead the <strong>Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra<\/strong> in an all-<strong>Brahms<\/strong> program focusing on music that is at the very heart of his repertoire: the <strong>Brahms<\/strong> <em>Symphony No. 2<\/em> and the <em>Piano Concerto No. 2<\/em>, with <strong>Garrick Ohlsson<\/strong> as soloist. <\/p>\n<h2>August 21-23, 2009 Tanglewood schedule<\/h2>\n<p>The schedule for the <strong>final week of the 2009 Tanglewood season<\/strong> will include <strong>Kurt Masur<\/strong> on August 21 conducting the BSO on a program with Haydn\u2019s <em>Symphony No. 88<\/em> and the <strong>Mozart<\/strong> <em>Piano Concerto No. 25 in C<\/em>, with pianist <strong>David Fray<\/strong>, making his BSO debut. <\/p>\n<p>The following night features Masur leading <strong>Mahler\u2019s<\/strong> <em>Symphony No. 4, Italian<\/em>, <em>The Hebrides (Fingal\u2019s Cave) Overture<\/em>, and the <em>Violin Concerto<\/em>, with violinist <strong>Gil Shaham<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The final program of the BSO\u2019s 2009 Tanglewood season will be the annual performance of <strong>Beethoven\u2019s Symphony No. 9<\/strong>, with conductor and Tanglewood Music Center alumnus <strong>Michael Tilson Thomas<\/strong>, with the <strong>Tanglewood Festival Chorus<\/strong>, soprano <strong>Erin Wall<\/strong> and mezzo-soprano <strong>Kendall Gladen<\/strong> in their BSO debuts, tenor <strong>Stuart Skelton<\/strong> in his Tanglewood debut, and bass-baritone <strong>Raymond Aceto<\/strong> on Aug. 23.
