Third week of the 2014 Tanglewood season has guest conductor Christoph von Dohnanyi<\/strong> leading the BSO<\/strong> and Thomas Hanson<\/strong> in selections from American composer Aaron Copland\u2019s<\/strong> Old American Songs<\/em>. Mr. Dohnanyi also leads the orchestra in Strauss\u2019s<\/strong> Till Eulenspiegel\u2019s Merry Pranks<\/em> and Beethoven\u2019s<\/strong> Symphony No. 7<\/em>. BSO Music Director Designate Andris Nelsons<\/strong> returns to lead the orchestra in a pair of concerts July 19 & 20. The Saturday performance features Brahms\u2019s<\/strong> Symphony No. 3<\/em> and Tchaikovsky\u2019s<\/strong> Capriccio italien<\/em>. The program includes contemporary Swedish composer Rolf Martinsson\u2019s<\/strong> Bridge, Trumpet Concerto No. 1<\/em>, with soloist H\u00e5kan Hardenberger<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

On Sunday, Mr. Nelsons is joined by virtuoso American violinist Joshua Bell<\/strong> for Lalo\u2019s<\/strong> Symphonie espagnole for violin and orchestra<\/em>, on a program that also includes Beethoven\u2019s<\/strong> immortal Symphony No. 5<\/em> and Pulitzer Prize-winning New York-based composer Christopher Rouse\u2019s<\/strong> Rapture<\/em>, a 2000 work that Rouse says is meant to convey \u201ca sense of spiritual bliss, religious or otherwise.\u201d <\/p>\n

\"AndrisOn Wednesday, July 23, New York-based orchestra The Knights<\/strong>, a unique and flexible ensemble featuring musicians and composers from diverse musical backgrounds that expands and contracts to accommodate the variety of music it performs, performs in Ozawa Hall<\/strong>. The program features Maria Schneider\u2019s<\/strong> Winter Morning Walks<\/em>, for soprano, jazz musicians, and strings, and transcriptions for trumpet and ensemble of songs by Joni Mitchell, Kurt Weill, Michel Legrand, and Astor Piazzolla<\/strong>. Soloists include soprano Dawn Upshaw<\/strong>, trumpetist H\u00e5kan Hardenberger, pianist Frank Kimbrough<\/strong>, clarinetist Scott Robinson<\/strong>, and bassist Jay Anderson<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

Ozawa Hall programs July 23 & 24, 2014<\/h2>\n

America\u2019s brightest young players ages 16\u201319 visit Tanglewood on Thursday, July 24, as the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America<\/strong> comes to Ozawa Hall. The program, led by St. Louis Symphony Music Director David Robertson<\/strong> and featuring American violinist Gil Shaham<\/strong>, includes Bernstein\u2019s<\/strong> Symphonic Dances from West Side Story<\/em>, Britten\u2019s<\/strong> Violin Concerto<\/em>, Mussorgsky\u2019s<\/strong> Pictures at an Exhibition<\/em>, and a new work by Samuel Adams<\/strong> commissioned and written for the orchestra. <\/p>\n
